TRYING TO DECIDE WHETHER TO USE YOUR INSURNACE OR PAY FOR IT YOURSELF?

There are pros and cons to both:

Through Insurance

✅ Advantages

  • Lower out-of-pocket cost – Typically just the deductible instead of the full repair bill.

  • Covers major damage – Ideal for accidents, structural damage, air bags, or high-dollar repairs.

  • Negotiation handled for you – The insurance company works directly with the shop.

  • Warranty protection – Many insurance-backed repairs come with guarantees.

  • Rental coverage – If included in the policy, you may get a rental car during repairs.

❌ Disadvantages

  • Claim on your record – May increase future premiums.

  • Deductible required – You pay this no matter what.

  • Repair limitations – Insurance may specify parts (aftermarket/reconditioned) or procedures.

  • Longer repair time – Waiting on approvals and adjusters can delay the process.

  • Loss of control – Insurance has the final say on scope and cost of repairs.

Self-Pay (Out of Pocket)

✅ Advantages

  • No insurance claim – No impact on premiums or claim history.

  • Faster turnaround – No adjuster approvals or paperwork delays.

  • Full control – You choose the shop, parts (OEM vs aftermarket), and repair level.

  • Flexible repairs – Option to repair only what’s necessary or cosmetic issues later.

  • Potential cost savings – For minor damage, self-pay can be cheaper than a deductible.

❌ Disadvantages

  • Higher upfront cost – You cover the full repair bill.

  • No rental coverage – Unless you pay separately.

  • Budget constraints – Large repairs may be difficult to manage out of pocket.

  • Limited warranties – Depends entirely on the shop, not an insurance guarantee.

  • Risk of under-repairing – Skipping hidden or safety-related damage to save money.
